“The Birthmark” is an extreme example of what happens when we try to change someone, or worse, play God. When we synthesize meaning, we make something we have read personal to us or to current events. Literature has meaning across all time periods. How can reading something like “The Birthmark” still be relevant today? In this week’s journal, focus on any aspect of this story that shows relevance either to you personally, in today’s society, or both. Write at least two paragraphs explaining how you are synthesizing meaning from this story and support with examples from the text.
