17 Jul Religious biographies
Religious biographies, or hagiographies, typically include material that we know did not
happen historically. Yet, hagiographies are effective in providing insightful illustrations
of idealized religious practice and exemplify foundational tenets of a tradition. Using the
hagiographies of Bodhidharma and Huineng, compare and/or contrast at least four (two
for each) practices or doctrines of early Indian Buddhism, Daoism, and/or Zen Buddhism.
Cite specific episodes in the biography of each figure and explain how that episode
illustrates a practice or principle central to the tradition. Be sure to elaborate on the
practice or principle as well. Cite specific examples from our readings where possible.
