1. A question relating Plato and Epicurus
“The art of living well and the art of dying well are the same.” (139)
Is this what Socrates means when he says (in Phaedo) “the true votary of
philosophy . . . is always pursuing death and dying; and . . . he has had the
desire of death all his life long” (47)? Do Epicurus and Plato have basically a
similar concept of philosophy and its value, or a different one? Does either
seem to make more sense to you, and if so, why? Is there any difference in
what Plato and Epicurus say of the relation between the good and pleasure,
or are they broadly of one mind on this question?
