The primary texts we have read speak a great deal about “mind.” Nanquan, for instance,
states, “Everyday mind is the Way,” and Huangbo asserts, “Mind is the Buddha.” What
are some of the different terms and concepts connected with “mind” you have
encountered in the readings, and how do they relate to one another and earlier Buddhist
or Daoist conceptions of “mind”? From a Chan/Zen perspective, do you think one should
“rely on the mind” as Sengcan (Seng-ts’an) suggests? Cite specific examples from our
readings where possible
