Epicurus

Epicurus

“One who is wise . . . would actually prefer to suffer setbacks while
acting wisely than to have miraculous luck while acting foolishly.” Letter to
Menoeceus, cpk 141
(1) Describe an example (can be made up) of suffering a setback
while acting wisely, and contrast it to an example of miraculous luck while
acting foolishly.
(2) Why do you think that for Epicurus unlucky but wise is better than
lucky but foolish? Cite places (either in Letter to Menoeceus or Principle
Doctrines) where you see him giving a reason for this idea and explain in
your own words how what he says supports that claim.
(3) Does his idea make sense to you, or do you disagree in some
respect? Say what persuades you one way or the other.
